Severed body parts found near Hollywood sign

Two women were out walking their dogs in Hollywood Hills yesterday afternoon, when they made a gruesome discovery: a human head wrapped in a garbage bag.

Today, two human hands were found in a popular tourist area near the Hollywood sign, not far from where the head was discovered.

Authorities have not been able to identify him yet, but they believe he is a man in his 40s with grey hair. An autopsy on the head was performed today, but it yielded few new clues. According to authorities, there weren’t many signs of decomposition, meaning the body parts were most likely recently discarded.

TMZ is reporting that a passerby took a photo of the head yesterday, and is currently trying to sell it to different news outlets.

Police are searching the area extensively for more body parts, and will continue to search throughout the night into tomorrow. I’ll post updates on the search below.

UPDATE: 1/19 7:30 AM CST

Two human feet were found last night, also in the area where the head and hands were found.  Police are saying they believe the man is in the 40 – 60 year age range.

Police are continuing to search the area for more body parts, and are also working to figure out who this man is.

It’s obviously way too early to determine what exactly happened to this man or who is responsible, but I can’t help but let my mind go crazy with different theories. It could be a Mexican drug cartel killing, especially considering the dismemberment of the body. I learned long ago that it’s a pretty common practice among the Mexican drug lords to dismember bodies (I wrote a paper on it in college – scary stuff).

The location of the remains is a bit confusing though. The Hollywood Hills area is not only a well-traveled touristy area, but it’s a pretty wealthy area as well. It almost seems like an attention thing, to discard the remains over there.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

UPDATE: 1/19 7:25 PM CST

Jane Vellez-Mitchell covered this story tonight on her show, and I found out some interesting new things about this case.

Jane showed an interview taped earlier today with Commander Andrew Smith from the LAPD. Smith said that a human torso was found in Tucson, Arizona, but there’s no comfirmation of any connection to the body parts found in Hollywood Hills as of yet. Smith said that he thinks it’s a stretch that someone would dump a torso in Arizona and then drive all the way to Hollywood to dump the rest of the body, but that it is a possibility they are looking into.

Another thing Smith said that caught my attention was that it appears as though someone had been trying to hide the body parts. All along I’ve been thinking that the parts were in pretty public areas, or in plain sight.  Now that the police are saying the parts looked like they were actually hidden, I’m somewhat abandoning the drug cartel theory. I just don’t think members of the cartel would go to such lengths to hide their killings.

So what does that leave? A domestic incident? It might sound odd to some people, but there definitely have been cases where a woman has murdered her husband and then dismembered him. Melanie McGuire, for example, was a nurse from New Jersey who was found guilty of murdering her husband, dismembering his body and putting the pieces into three separate suitcases, and then throwing them into the Chesapeake Bay.

Or was this just a gruesome random crime? To me, dismembering someone seems like a very personal and hateful thing to do to someone, so I’m not really inclined to think it was a random crime (ie robbery) gone wrong, or anything like that. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Either way, I would be terrified if I lived in the Hollywood area right now, and I hope all the residents there are being extra cautious and on the lookout.  There’s definitely a sick monster out there.

UPDATE: 1/20 5:55 PM CST

Police have identified the man, but are not releasing his name to the public.  They also served a search warrant on a nearby Hollywood apartment and apparently left with evidence that may be connected to the case.

I have a feeling we’re going to learn exactly what happened soon.

Jorelys Rivera murder: Ryan Brunn pleads guilty, sentenced to life in prison

My first post about Jorelys Rivera can be found here:

Ryan Brunn pleaded guilty yesterday to the brutal murder of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera, who disappeared last month while playing at a playground down the street. Her remains were later found in a neighborhood dumpster.

Yesterday Brunn stood up and told the court how he lured Jorelys into a vacant apartment to molest her.  He goes  on to detail about how he then went on to kill her, but I don’t want to go into those details here. Reading them once is heart-wrenching enough, let alone writing about them.

After he discarded Jorelys’ body, Brunn says he then hung out with some friends and smoked meth.

He was sentenced to life in prison without parole, his guilty plea sparing him from the death penalty.

I think it’s really important to report about cases like these. This was the case of a very seemingly normal 20-year-old kid who apparently is sexually attracted to children, and capable of brutal murder. I’m not saying everyone should go around being a paranoid nut  bag, but I do think people need to be more aware that these things happen, and that not every criminal looks like you would expect them to.

UPDATE: 1/19 12:45 PM CST

I just read a news article from 11Alive that says Brunn is a suspect in two different child molestation cases – you can read more about it here.

Man murders 4, sets house on fire in Villa Park, IL

I had just arrived at work yesterday morning, when I received a breaking news alert from the Chicago Tribune, saying that there was a fire with four fatalities right by where I live. At first I was a little concerned that it might be MY house (Did I leave the curling iron plugged in?), but as the news updated, I learned that it was actually a few blocks away from my neighborhood.

I also learned that the four victims weren’t victims of a fire; instead, all four had been murdered first, and the fire had been set afterwards.

Ursula Nailor, a 37-year-old bus driver, her two children, Darnell Holt Jr., 16, and Daniel Nailor, 13, and her niece Dominique Robinson, 19, were all shot and killed early yesterday morning. The suspect, Nailor’s 42-year-old boyfriend Cedric Anderson, then set the house on fire and fled to his parents’ house in Dolton, Illinois, where he ultimately committed suicide yesterday afternoon.

I had to pass by the scene on my way home from work yesterday, and I couldn’t believe how many news vans and police cars surrounded the street. A sad, sad story, literally close to home.

May the victims rest in peace.

Joran Van Der Sloot: Justice for Stephany

Joran Van Der Sloot, the infamous Dutch national who is the official suspect in the Natalee Holloway case, was officially sentenced last week to 28 years in prison for the brutal murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores.

In court last Wednesday, Joran looked bored and inconvenienced as he pleaded guilty to murdering Stephany five years to the day after Alabama teen Natalee Holloway disappeared from Aruba. Joran claimed that he truly felt bad about what he had done to Stephany, but the look on his face didn’t seem to reflect that sentiment at all. According to his lawyer, Joran had become “psychologically unhinged” after being “falsely accused” of Natalee Holloway’s death, and that is why he had snapped and killed Stephany.

So why did Joran plead guilty? Simply put, he wanted a shorter sentence. In Peru, if a defendant admits to guilt and offers up a “sincere confession” that goes along with the evidence the prosecutors have, he then has a very good chance of receiving a lighter sentence.

Fortunately for women everywhere, Joran’s all-female judges weren’t buying it, and rejected his plea on Friday, saying that it “did not meet the criteria of a sincere confession.” When he returned to court on Friday to hear his sentence, Joran looked considerably more nervous than he had the few days prior. He was sweating, wiping his brow, and looked like he would rather be anywhere else on Earth than in that courtroom.

Don’t get too excited though.  With good behavior, Joran could be up for parole after only 9 years. Hopefully, if everything works out, he will then immediately be extradited to the U.S. so that he can go on trial for the extortion of Natalee Holloway’s mother, as well as for wire fraud. (For those who don’t know, Joran had extorted money from Beth Holloway, by telling her he would reveal the location of Natalee’s body – you can read the criminal complaint against him here).

Joran is being transferred from the Castro Castro prison he was in while awaiting trial (and where he was reportedly receiving internet access, and was able to watch TV), to the high-security Piedras Gordas prison in northern Lima.

Joran is expected to appeal his sentence, which will hopefully fall on deaf ears.

UPDATE: 1/19 7 PM CST

RadarOnline apparently has a letter from Joran to his “guardian angel” (see my prior post here) that he allegedly wrote to her after his sentencing.  In the letter, he is begging her to continue supporting him.

He also tells her that he and his lawyer pleaded guilty for a reason, and that now his case will be handled at a higher court, which is “more serious.”

Someone is feeling pretty confident that he’s getting out, soon, huh? Let’s hope not.

Read the letter here.

A Casey Anthony Copycat? Missing Amir Jennings

As America is still reeling from the Casey Anthony acquittal, another child has gone missing, with another mother charged with lying about her child’s whereabouts.

18-month-old Amir Jennings has been missing from Columbia, Georgia, since Thanksgiving weekend. He and his mother, 22-year-old Zinah Jennings, were reported missing in early December, by Zinah’s mother. On Christmas Eve, Zinah was involved in a car accident, and when the responding police officer entered her info into the system, he inquired about her and her missing son. Zinah apparently gave “false information” about her son’s whereabouts and was taken into custody. Zinah is charged with unlawful conduct towards a child, and is being held on a $150,000 bond, while the police continue to look for Amir.

According to one of the search warrants conducted on Zinah’s home, Zinah had apparently told the police officers numerous false stories about where Amir was. At first she had told them she did not have a son, but later recanted, saying that Amir was with a man named Ernest Robinson, who the police have yet to find (meaning he doesn’t exist, much like Zanny the Nanny from the Caylee Anthony case). On January 2, Zinah took investigators to an apartment complex where she said she dropped Amir off, but could not remember the exact apartment number.

The search warrants I’m referring to are below. They have redacted information that we can’t see, but WSOCTV.com is reporting that among the redacted info is the fact that bloody clothes and blankets were found in Zinah’s car when she was taken into custody. Also redacted in the warrants is information that police removed a shovel from Zinah’s home that cadaver dogs had hit on.

Zinah’s family says they had received some “disturbing” phone calls from Zinah before the disappearance, in which she had told them about an ongoing battle she was having with depression.

Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott told reporters that according to Zinah’s mother, Zinah had been a very good student while in school, but her conduct had changed after having Amir. 11Alive News is reporting that about a month before Amir’s disappearance, Zinah had been arrested for prostitution and drug possession.

Scott said that although Zinah is cooperating with them more than she was in the very beginning, she still will not tell them where Amir is. She recently told investigators that she last saw him at her house on November 29th, and that it was up to the police to find him.

Zinah and Amir’s family have been making the rounds and pleading with the public to help them find the missing toddler. If you have have information on Amir’s whereabouts, please call Crimestoppers at 1-888 CRIME SC. There is a $10,000 reward for information leading to his return.

I don’t even really know what to say about this right now, except that I wonder how many more of these cases we are going to see. Damn you, Casey Anthony.

Casey Anthony speaks…do we care?

As I’m sure everyone has heard by now (it’s been all over the news all day), a video has surfaced on YouTube of Casey Anthony, speaking out in a “video diary,” about life after her acquittal.  She looks different, with short blonde hair and thick black eye glasses, but the things she says and the way in which she says them seem like classic Casey.

Click here to see the video.

Cheney Mason, one of Casey’s defense attorneys, spoke to WOFL-TV today and confirmed that the woman in the video is indeed Casey Anthony, but that she never intended for the video to be released.

“Casey has maintained some notes on her thoughts for personal use, especially for counseling. She did not release this video to YouTube and does not know how they got it. It could not have been legally obtained and was not authorized.”

The man who posted the video on YouTube called in to talk to Nancy Grace and said that he found the video online at a pay-per-view site and managed to download the video for free. He claims he did nothing illegal and that he did not hack into Casey Anthony’s computer.

Nancy Grace seems pretty positive that this video was released on purpose by Casey and/or her defense team as part of a PR stunt, but I’m not sure I’m entirely sold on that theory. I mean, one of the main things people are talking about with regard to this video is the fact that Casey doesn’t mention Caylee once. If this was a PR stunt, then they did a shitty job of portraying Casey as anything less than a sociopath monster, which I doubt is the look they would be going for. On the other hand, I’m not sure Casey has the smartest people behind her though, so I guess it is a possibility.

No matter how or why it was released, whether it was intentional or not, I think it was a pretty dangerous move. It looks like there are pictures in the background, and Casey clearly says someone’s name, although it’s edited out. I’m sure there will be people who will blow up the images in the background, and try their best to read Casey’s lips during the edited parts. People might be able to figure out where’s she’s hiding out, and who has been helping her. As much as I dislike Casey Anthony, I wouldn’t want anyone to go and physically harm her.

Quite honestly, no matter how the video came into existence, I don’t even care, and I don’t think anyone else should either.  I know the majority of us think that Casey literally got away with murder.  And not only that, but her victim was an adorably sweet little girl named Caylee that the entire nation seemed to fall in love with. There’s nothing anyone can do about it though. It is what it is, and much like the OJ Simpson trial, we just need to move on and not continue to give Casey the attention we suspect she craves.

The bottom line is that again somehow the focus has gotten off of Caylee and back onto Casey. In all these news shows I’m watching tonight, I’ve only heard the word “Caylee” mentioned a handful of times. That’s sad.

Possible Serial Killer In Detroit

It appears as though there is a serial killer on the loose in Detroit, who is possibly targeting escorts.

On Monday, Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee held a press conference to inform the public about 4 bodies found in two separate incidences that are most likely connected. In each incident, two women were found deceased in the trunk of a car, and police say that at least 3 of the victims posted escort-type ads on the same web site.

On December 19th, two women were found dead in the trunk of a 2009 Chrysler 300C, that was parked in the driveway of a vacant home.  There were no outer signs of trauma on the women, and no cause of death has been determined yet. Godbee said that due to the fact that the bodies were hidden inside of the trunk, they are investigating the incident as a homicide. The two victims were identified as cousins Demesha Hunt, 24, and Renisha Landers, 23. According to the Huffington Post, the relatives of Hunt and Landers insist that the girls were not escorts.

On December 25th, Detroit Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire inside of a garage on the East side. Upon extinguishing the fire, firefighters discovered two bodies in the trunk – both females ages 28 and 29 years old. The bodies have been tentatively identified, but only one name has been released to the public – 29-year-old Vernithea McCrary.

Godbee said police are awaiting the medical examiner’s final report to determine the cause of deaths for the four women.

The Detroit Police Department’s initial investigation has revealed a connection between at least three of the four victims. Each girl had placed an ad on www.backpage.com, a site similar to Craigslist, that offers everything from automotive to real estate services.  Three of the four women apparently have a link to the “pre-arranged adult services section”.

7 Action News is reporting that police are also looking into about a dozen other sites that the women may have posted ads on.

Urgent: 20 month old toddler missing from Waterville Maine

Ayla Reynolds, a 20-month-old toddler from Waterville Maine, is missing today, after having last been seen by a family member at 10 p.m. Friday night. When Ayla’s father went to her bedroom to check on her at about 9 a.m. the next morning, she was gone. Police responded to the home at 29 Violette Avenue, after receiving a call from her father.

Ayla was wearing green, one-piece pajamas with polka dots and the words “Daddy’s Princess” on them. She is 2-feet 9-inches tall, and weighs approximately 30 pounds. She has short blond hair and blue eyes, and her left arm is in a sling and a soft splint.  Police say they believe she either wandered off and left the house on her own, or she was abducted.

Police have been searching the neighborhood extensively for any signs of Ayla, but so far haven’t had any luck.  The temperature in Waterville, Maine has been in the single digits, so if Ayla is wandering around somewhere, needless to say, that is extremely dangerous. Police have said they are also intensely searching Ayla’s home for any kind of forensic evidence. They have also spoken with Ayla’s mother, who does not live at the home with Ayla and her father, and they say the entire family is fully cooperating.

Anyone with information regarding Ayla’s whereabouts is asked to call the Waterville Police Department at (207) 680-4700.

Click here to see Good Morning America’s coverage of the case that aired earlier this morning.

Police are expected to hold a press conference to update the media this afternoon.

UPDATE: 12/19 7:15 AM CST

The timeline for the night Ayla went missing has now been adjusted – Ayla’s father apparently put her to bed at about 8 p.m. Friday night.  This means that Ayla was not seen or checked up on for almost 13 hours.

Good Morning America interviewed Ayla’s mother, Trista Reynolds, who said she and Ayla’s father, Justin DiPietro, shared custody of her, but they had not been getting along very well over the last few weeks. She said that she had filed paperwork for full custody of Ayla on Thursday, the day before she disappeared. She did not tell DiPietro, and said there was no way he could have known. She said they have not spoken since the disappearance, which seems pretty strange to me. If Ayla was truly abducted from her home by a stranger and no one knows where she is, don’t you think her parents should be able to put all their issues aside to unite and try to find their daughter?

Even if Reynolds blames DiPietro because she went missing from his home under his care, don’t you think he would be the first person she would want to talk to, to try and get more information from him?

Ayla has been missing now for 3 days.

UPDATE: 12/19 9:50 PM CST

Police held another press conference today, but didn’t reveal much more about their investigation, except to say that they were searching a nearby stream for any signs of Ayla.

The Portland Herald Press, however, reported that police have seized two cars from Ayla’s residence, and are processing them for evidence.

On Jane Vellez-Mitchell tonight, it was reported that a neighbor heard a loud noise at about 3:30 a.m. the morning Ayla disappeared.

Nancy Grace also covered Ayla on her show tonight. Trista Reynolds, the baby’s mother,  called into the show. According to Trista, Ayla doesn’t normally sleep through the night, so the 13 hours sounds a little more suspect to me.

Trista also addressed why Ayla’s arm was broken.  Ayla’s father, Justin DiPietro, had told Trista that he fell on her while going up the stairs with Ayla in his arms.  He had supposedly waited 24 hours before he took her to the hospital.Trista also claimed that every time Ayla has come back from spending time with her father, she has had bruises on her.

Mark Klaas, Founder of the KlaasKids Foundation, also appeared on Nancy Grace and brought up a really good point. Ayla had a cast on her arm. If someone wanted to abduct a toddler, why would they choose one with a cast? People would surely see them and remember seeing a little girl with a cast on, and that would be a big risk if they don’t want to get caught.

Another interesting point is that Trista also stated on Nancy Grace that Ayla had missed a doctor’s appointment this past Friday. This makes me wonder who the last person, aside from Justin DiPietro, was to see this child. Maybe she went missing a lot sooner than Friday night at 8 p.m.

Who Killed Amanda Price?

Ron and Amanda Price with their daughter

Amanda Price, a wife and mother from New Albany, Mississippi, was shot and killed just outside of her home on Monday, December 6.  Just before 10 p.m., Amanda went outside to the backyard to let the family dog out, when a masked man shot her in the chest. Amanda’s husband, local high school football coach Ron Price, ran outside when he heard the commotion, and was shot in the shoulder.

Ron was treated and released from the hospital hours later, but Amanda didn’t survive. Police say there was a string of car burglaries in the area at around the same time as the shooting. According to police, Ron told them the shooter was approximately 6 foot tall, dressed in dark clothing, and had a mask over his face.

The couple has a three year old daughter who was home at the time of the shootings, but was not hurt.

Ron had just completed his fourth season as head football coach at New Albany High School, and Amanda was a speech pathologist as a nearby school. According to neighbors in their community, Ron and Amanda were very well-liked and appeared to be a “perfect couple.”

Police say they are continuing to follow leads and that they believe this was a random shooting. There is a reward of $25,000 being offered for information leading to a conviction.

UPDATE: 12/17 7:15 PM CST

WTVA is reporting that two persons of interest are currently in custody, being held for parole violations.  The two are said to be males in their early 20s, who were arrested on theft charges.

Charges are expected to be filed in this case early next week.

UPDATE: 12/21 1 PM CST

An arrest has officially been made in this case. Craig O’Brien Baker, 20, has been arrested and charged with one count of capital murder, one count of aggravated assault, and two counts of auto burglary.

Police say Baker had no connection to the Prices, and that they believe it was a random home invasion gone bad.

Baker has been denied bond, and authorities say they will seek the death penalty.

RIP Amanda.

Jorelys Rivera found; 20-year old arrested for her murder

7-year-old Jorelys Rivera went missing on Friday, December 2nd, as she was playing at a local playground near the River Ridge apartment complex where she lived. A teenaged babysitter was watching Jorelys along with several other kids, when Jorelys headed back to the complex by herself to get drinks for everyone. She was never seen or heard from again.

On Monday, Jorelys’ body was found in a dumpster near the complex. She had been badly beaten and sexually assaulted. While the community mourned the loss of this beautiful little girl, a 20-year maintenance worker who lived and worked in her building was arrested.

Ryan Brunn, who had recently moved to the Canton, Georgia area from Dahlonega, was taken into custody yesterday and charged with Jorelys’ murder. He had apparently been under surveillance since Tuesday night, and by yesterday afternoon, there was sufficient evidence to arrest him. Brunn had been working at the complex since the beginning of November. At a press conference held shortly after the arrest, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Vernon Keenan states that this is a “mammoth” case and that they are certain they have the killer in custody.

Brunn has no criminal record, according to members of his family. His brother, Connor Brunn, gave an interview to reporters yesterday, and said he does not believe his brother is guilty, and that Brunn had even been out searching for the little girl himself.

I have to say that Brunn’s arrest is rather shocking. When I first heard about Jorelys’ body having been found, I thought for sure the perp would be an older, creepy-looking guy, who was most likely a registered sex offender. The fact that Ryan Brunn was a seemingly normal 20-year-old makes it almost difficult to believe that he could be capable of such a heinous crime. Below is a screenshot of Ryan Brunn’s Facebook page (which has since been taken down). He seems like a popular well-liked 20-year-old, and states that he has a “wonderful life/family/friends.”

Also interesting to note is a comment Brunn made on his page on July 6, the same day as the Casey Anthony verdict came in.

Could one child murderer really be commenting about another child murderer?

I haven’t seen any confirmation of any evidence that police have against him yet, but different news outlets are reporting that Brunn killed Jorelys in a vacant apartment in the building next door, and that her mouth was duct-taped, and her hands and feet were bound with plastic ties.

Brunn is due in court later this afternoon for his arraignment, so there should definitely be more details released about his arrest shortly. He is currently charged with homicide and making false statements, but more charges are expected later today.
